MeitY to take action against AI tools like Grok representing obscenity?

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is examining a tougher crackdown on obscene AI-generated images of women, with Grok-style tools and fake accounts under particular scrutiny. Officials are signalling that upcoming enforcement could combine existing IT Act provisions, the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, and newly tightened IT Rules on deepfakes and synthetic media to fix liability on both platforms and individuals. Platforms may be asked to auto-detect, label and rapidly remove non-consensual sexualised imagery created using AI, especially where women’s photos are scraped and modified via anonymous handles, with failure inviting loss of safe harbour and possible criminal exposure.
